Course Description

This is a highly practical course, in which you provide evidence for your work in a variety of ways. Your evidence for all types of assessment might be; a performance, a video diary, a log book, a power point presentation, a lecture demo or any combination from this list. The two core units are Individual Showcase and Preparation, Performance and Production. The one mandatory unit is Unit Three Acting. The course provides a broad, balanced introduction to performing arts and keeps all possible progression pathways open.

Assessment Format

There is one externally assessed unit, which are worth 25% of the course. The Individual Showcase requires each learner to perform an audition piece and to write a letter of application. There is still 75% of the course that has assignments set and assessed by the teacher.
The assessment levels are:

  • Unclassified
  • Level One
  • Level Two Pass
  • Level Two Merit
  • Level Two Distinction

The Award is equivalent to a GCSE A*-C. A is equal to a distinction, B a merit and C is a pass.

Possible Progression (including careers and further education)

The Edexcel BTEC level 2 First Award in Performing Arts provides a good foundation for learners in post-16 education.  It provides suitable foundation for further study within the sector through progression to qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Performing Arts. Successful learners at level 2 may also consider general qualifications at level 3, such as AS or A levels in Drama and Theatre Studies and Performing Arts. The qualification does reflect the needs of employers and further and higher education institutions.
